DOD Approves Community Adjustment Assistance Grant for the City of Long Beach

The Department of Defense (DOD) announced today a $3,995,609 grant from its Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) to the City of Long Beach to provide community adjustment assistance to plan for anticipated reductions in regional defense industry employment.

These federal funds are part of a larger $4,441,684 project in which the City of Long Beach and its partners will develop and implement a comprehensive economic transition program in the wake of the closure of the C-17 Globemaster production facility located in Long Beach.  The goals of the program are to:

.               Assist the region (to include impacted firms and neighboring jurisdictions) transition successfully while retaining its regional skills base, competitiveness, and sector expertise;

.               Minimize the economic impact of the plant closure by supporting the re-employment of as many as 3,000 defense workers directly dislocated;

.               Conduct a compatibility study of the site with respect to the Long Beach Airport (LGB); and

.               Produce a C-17 Transition Master Plan as a guiding economic and land use / infrastructure planning strategy by use for the region.

The grant is awarded under OEA's Defense Industry Adjustment Program to assist states and communities which have been significantly impacted by reductions or cancellations in DoD spending.  States and communities can request OEA assistance to: organize themselves to respond on behalf of affected communities, workers, and businesses; plan local community and economic adjustment activities to lessen local economic impacts; and, carry-out plans to replace lost economic activity.  OEA project managers work with impacted areas to coordinate a broader program of assistance from across the federal government when necessary.  Proposals are considered for funding on a rolling basis and are subject to the availability of appropriations.

Further information about this program may be found on OEA's website at www.oea.gov. The point of contact for this award is Arturo Sanchez, City of Long Beach deputy city manager.  He can be contacted by phone, 562- 570-6711.
