“Following the horrors of World War I a century ago, civilized nations joined together to ban chemical warfare. … The purpose of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread, and use of chemical weapons.”

Defense Secretary James N. Mattis issued remarks regarding combined U.S., French and British forces’ precision strikes against chemical weapons installations in Syria:

“Together, we have sent a clear message to Assad, and his murderous lieutenants, that they should not perpetrate another chemical weapons attack for which they will be held accountable.”
