Today, Secretary Carter met with German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen at the Pentagon. During the 45 minute meeting, the leaders discussed their continuing efforts in NATO and support to Iraq and Afghanistan. This was Secretary Carter's first meeting with the defense minister.
Secretary Carter and Minister von der Leyen emphasized the importance of NATO unity against Russian aggression and discussed ways to work together to support NATO reassurance measures. The secretary thanked the minister for Germany's support to Kurdish forces in fighting ISIL, and welcomed Germany's continued leadership and commitment in Afghanistan.
The two leaders expressed their commitment to a strong working relationship and noted that they are looking forward to meeting at upcoming NATO ministerials.
