Readout of Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work’s Visit to Norway

Deputy Secretary of Defense Spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson provided the following:

Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work visited Oslo, Trondheim, and Bodo, Norway, Sept. 7-9. He met with senior Norwegian officials to hear their concerns about emerging security challenges in the Nordic region.

Work also participated in a Nordic Deputy Defense Ministers meeting hosted by Norway's State Secretary for Defense Oystein Bo. This was the first time deputy secretaries from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland and the U.S met together to discuss opportunities to further cooperation and address potential threats.

He emphasized that such meetings are important opportunities to exchange views on security challenges on the Northern Flank and to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation in areas of shared concern. The deputy secretary also thanked each of his Nordic counterparts for their contributions to international security.

Separately, Work participated in two days of discussions with both the Norwegian Minister of Defense Ine Eriksen Soreide and Bo, which focused on the wide range of bilateral initiatives that the U.S. and Norway have undertaken, including prepositioning and a full schedule of exercises and training.

Throughout the visit, Work reaffirmed the close and historic friendship between the U.S. and Norway.

Work visited the Norwegian Joint Headquarters in Bodo, Norway, and toured the Marine Corps Prepositioning Program-Norway (MCPP-N) equipment in the Frigarden Cave in Trondheim, Norway. He also watched demonstrations of small boat operations in the Norwegian fjords and flew in a Norwegian P-3C maritime patrol aircraft.

This trip will conclude Sept. 12, following a visit to the United Kingdom. Prior to Norway, the deputy secretary visited Iceland.
