U.S. Marines prepare to trap a F/A-18 Hornet at Roswell, N.M.
U.S. Marine expeditionary airfield technicians place boots under the cable of the M21 Arresting Gear stretched across the runway at Roswell Industrial Air Center, N.M., on June 8, 1996, as they prepare to trap a F/A-18 Hornet. The Marines are deployed from the MWSS 273, Beaufort, S.C., to Roswell for exercise Rovings Sands '96, the world's largest joint, tactical air defense exercise involving service men and women from the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands and Canada. The exercise allows multinational forces to practice tactics, techniques and procedures improving their defense capabilities. The boots lift the cable off the runway so the tailhook of the aircraft engages.
