Post-dive operations to prepare for decompression
U.S. Navy diver Damage Controlman Chief Michael Bosler, of Louisville, Ky., is assisted in removing diving suit and gear following a 60-minute dive, during search and recovery operations at the TWA Flight 800 crash site. Divers enter the chamber within three minutes after they emerge and undergo surface decompression, a procedure that rids the body of the excess nitrogen. Conducting 24 hour operations in 12 hour shifts, the U.S. Navy's salvage rescue ship USS Grasp (ARS 51) has dive teams submerged to depths of 120.
