U.S. Navy aviation ordnancemen load Sidewinder and Phoenix missiles on an F-14 Tomcat.
U.S. Navy aviation ordnancemen load Sidewinder and Phoenix missiles as they prepare an F-14 Tomcat for the first patrol of the extended no-fly zone over Iraq on Sept. 4, 1996. President Clinton announced an expanded no-fly zone in response to an Iraqi attack against a Kurdish faction. The larger no-fly zone in Southern Iraq will make it easier for U.S. and coalition partners to contain Saddam Hussein's aggression. The Fighter Squadron 31 Tomcat is operating from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch.
