Scientists and crew members conduct experiments on the Arctic ice flow.
Scientists and crew members assigned to the attack submarine USS Pogy (SSN 647) conduct experiments on and under the Arctic ice flow. The submarine is on a 45-day research mission to the North Pole. Seven scientists and technical advisors are conducting experiments and collecting samples for studies in water mass properties, geophysics, ice mechanics and pollution detection in the Arctic Ocean. The red tent temporary erected on the hull of the Pogy provides protection from the Arctic elements and a space to conduct more delicate procedures. The research voyage is the second of five planned deployments through the year 2000.
