President Clinton nominates Gen. Shelton to succeed Gen. Shalikashvilli.
President Clinton announced his nomination of Gen. Henry H. Shelton, U.S. Army, to succeed Gen. John M. Shalikashvilli, U.S. Army, as Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a White House ceremony on July 17, 1997. Gen. Shelton is presently the Commander in Chief, United States Special Operations Command.
