President Bill Clinton praises his senior military adviser Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. John M. Shalikashvili, during his farewell ceremony at Fort Myer, Va., on Sept. 30, 1997. Shalikashvili is retiring from the U.S. Army and his job as the nation's senior military officer and will be succeeded by Gen. Henry H. Shelton, U.S. Army.
