Fireman Russell Legett inspects and inventories chemical protective garments before being issued to the crew members of the USS George Washington (CVN 73) as the ship heads towards the Persian Gulf on Nov. 19, 1997. All crew members will have received equipment issue and training for chemical and biological warfare prior to entering the Persian Gulf. The aircraft carrier and its battle group have been ordered to the to join the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) battle group already on station. The two battle groups will be operating in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Southern Watch which is the U.S. and coalition enforcement of the no-fly-zone over Southern Iraq. Legett is from Florence, S.C.
