U.S. Marine Capt. Beau Higgins, of New Orleans, La., maintains a steady pace along the course as he nears the finishing point for the 30 kilometer Viking Run in the country side of Ilidza, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Sept. 24, 1998. The Norwegian Army Telemark Company is hosting the Viking Run, an annual physical fitness test in the Norwegian Army. It consists of running 30 kilometers (18.5 miles) over rough terrain wearing a combat uniform, flack-jacket, long-barrel rifle, 2 full ammunition magazines, and a helmet totaling a minimum of 11 kilograms. One-hundred-five members of the NATO Stabilization Force are participating in the endurance run. Higgins finished the race in 3 hours, 25 minutes and 13 seconds.
