Navy Diver Lt. j.g. Rebecca Aten peers out through a MK-21 dive helmet before entering the ocean in Lumut, Malaysia, from the deck of the USS Safeguard (ARS 50), on Aug. 16, 2000. Aten is in Malaysia for Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training 2000, an annual series of bilateral exercises between the U.S. and Southeast Asian navies designed to promote interoperability. The Safeguard, which is a rescue and salvage ship, hosted a group of Malaysian deep-sea divers for a familiarization dive with the MK-21 dive system. Aten, from Arlington, Va., is the supply officer aboard the Safeguard.
