Secretary Cohen announces the release of the report of the USS Cole Commission at a Pentagon press conference.
Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen announces the release of the unclassified version of the report of the USS Cole Commission at a Pentagon press conference on Jan. 9, 2001. Cohen told reporters that he had turned the classified report over to Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Henry Shelton, U.S. Army, for his advice concerning implementation of the report's recommendations and any other additional actions the Department of Defense should take. The USS Cole (DDG 67) was the target of a terrorist attack in the port of Aden, Yemen, on Oct. 12, 2000, during a scheduled refueling. The attack killed 17 crew members and injured 39 others.
