At the White House President George W. Bush hosted a reenlistment ceremony for 100 servicemembers representing each of the Armed Forces on May 23, 2001. Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld delivered the opening remarks and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Henry H. Shelton administered the oath of enlistment. President Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld both spoke before the reenlistment ceremony, with Rumsfeld telling the troops their task now is to "protect our country from the unknown, uncertain, unseen and unexpected."
