Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz (left foreground) meets with Russia's Marshal Igor Sergeyev (right), special advisor to President Vladimir Putin on strategic stability. The meeting, held at the Pentagon on June 20, 2001, is part of a continuing effort to reach a consensus with the Russians regarding the Bush administration's desire to modify the anti-ballistic missile treaty. The U.S. plan to develop defenses against a limited ballistic missile strike by a rogue state, would run counter to the provisions of the existing treaty.
