The North Atlantic Council Defense Ministerial gets underway at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, on June 7, 2001. Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (under the NATO sign) is attending his first NATO ministerial in his second term of office. Rumsfeld is one of the most experienced NATO participants having served as NATO ambassador during 1973-74 and as secretary of defense under President Gerald Ford 1975-77. The NATO meeting is one stop of Rumsfeld's seven-day, seven-nation, European tour.
