Assistant Fire Chief James H. Schwartz, of the Arlington County Fire Dept., answers questions on the status of the containment of fire in the Pentagon during a joint press briefing on Sept. 14, 2001. The fire was caused when a hijacked American Airlines flight slammed into the building on Sept. 11th. The terrorist attack caused extensive damage to the west face of the building and followed similar attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Maj. Gen. James Jackson, commanding general of the Military District of Washington, and Director of the Federal Facilities Division John F. Irby joined Schwartz in briefing the initial damage assessment of the Pentagon.
