Pete Pace at a welcoming ceremony for the new vice chairman held at Fort Myer, Va. on Oct. 15, 2001. Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld and President George W. Bush were on hand to formally welcome Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard B. Myers, U.S. Air Force, and Pace to their new posts at the Pentagon. Gen. Pace becomes the first Marine Corps officer to hold one of the two top uniformed positions in the DoD.
