Navy Chief Petty Officer Bernard Brown carries the Olympic torch through a cordon of American flags on the Pentagon parade field at the start of the Dec. 21, 2001, ceremony. Sixteen persons directly affected by the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the Pentagon were honored participants in the torch ceremony. The Olympic flame will continue on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, where the Winter Games will begin on Feb. 8, 2002.
