Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld accepts a check for $10,187.93 for rebuilding the Pentagon from the 8th grade class of Moorefield Middle School, Moorefield, W. Va., during a Pentagon ceremony on Jan. 15, 2002. Lasidi Helmick (behind check) formulated the idea for the contributions during her 8th grade history class. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito (right of the check), R-W. Va., attached the plan as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002. The plan authorizes the Secretary of Defense to accept contributions from individuals for the sole purpose of assisting in the repair of the damage caused to the Pentagon by the terrorist attack that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001.
