Audience members and participants wave flags during the Sept. 11 Observance Ceremony.
Mrs. Joyce Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, First Lady Laura Bush, President George W. Bush, and Commandant of the Marine Corps General James L. Jones, wave American flags as they take part in the Sept. 11 Observance Ceremony at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2002. They joined more than 13,000 people at the service to remember those who lost their lives one year ago when terrorists crashed a commercial airliner into the Pentagon. The ceremony was held at the site of the terrorist attack, which was reconstructed within one year in what was known as the Phoenix Project.
