Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (left) talks with Capt. Bostjani Pas (center) and Brigadier Lipic, chief of the Slovenian General Staff, as he watches troops of the Slovenian Army's 1st Brigade, 10th Motorized Battalion during his visit to Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Nov. 23, 2002. This unit will soon deploy to the U.S. sector in Bosnia as part of the multinational peacekeeping force. That movement will mark the first foreign deployment of Slovenian troops. Pas will command the troops on deployment. Rumsfeld flew to Slovenia just one day after the conclusion of the NATO Summit, held in Prague, Czech Republic. At that historic meeting Slovenia and six other nations were nominated for NATO membership.
