Acting Secretary of the Army Les Brownlee (right) and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker (left) announce the restructuring of Army aviation during a Pentagon press briefing on Feb. 23, 2004. The changes announced come in response to an ongoing, comprehensive, review of Army aviation and will be achieved partially at the expense of the decade-old Comanche helicopter program, which will be terminated. The two Army leaders emphasized that much of the advanced technology of the Comanche will be incorporated in the latest model Apache attack helicopter, which will be a key element of the new aviation units.
