Secretary of the Navy Gordon England announces the commencement of combatant status review hearings for detainees in the war on terrorism at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, during a Pentagon press briefing on July 30, 2004. England has been appointed by Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld to oversee the tribunals being held to determine the combatant status of the approximately 590 detainees at Guantanamo.
