U.S. Air Force Capt. Tina Smith, a meteorologist with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, monitors data obtained during a 10-hour mission through tropical storm Felicia at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, on Aug. 9, 2009. The unit, also known as the Hurricane Hunters, operates the WC-130J Hercules aircraft for weather reconnaissance into some of the most violent storms on Earth. Hurricane Felicia reached peak strength as a category 4 storm with sustained winds of more than 145 mph.
