U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Jose Aguilarmendez, a machine gun team leader with 1st Platoon, Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, carries an Afghan that was injured by an improvised explosive device during a security patrol in Sangin district, Helmand province, Afghanistan, on Jan. 12, 2011. Marines conducted security patrols to decrease insurgency and gain the trust of the local population. The battalion was one of the combat elements of Regimental Combat Team 2, which conducted counterinsurgency operations in partnership with the International Security Assistance Forces.
