U.S. Air Force airmen prepare to stow a fire hose after filling a Modular Airborne Firefighting System
U.S. Air Force airmen with the 302nd Airlift Wing prepare to stow a fire hose after filling a Modular Airborne Firefighting System (MAFFS) II aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., on June 27, 2012. Four MAFFS-equipped aircraft flew missions to help fight the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs, a blaze that started four days earlier and burned several hundred homes, forcing large-scale evacuations in Colorado Springs and at the Air Force Academy. MAFFS II is a self-contained aerial firefighting system that can discharge 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds.
