Vice Adm. Harold W. Gehman, Jr., U.S. Navy
Vice Adm. Harold W. Gehman, Jr., U.S. Navy, has been nominated by the President for appointment to the grade of admiral and assignment as Vice Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. Vice Adm. Gehman was born in Norfolk, Va., on Oct. 15, 1942. He attended the NROTC program at Pennsylvania State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering in March 1965. His first tour of duty was as Main Propulsion Assistant and Damage Control Assistant aboard USS English (DD 696) in Mayport, Fla. His next tour was in Vietnam as Officer-in-Charge of the Swift Boat PCF 27 and later as Officer-in-Charge of a detachment of seven Swifts at Chu Lai, Vietnam. After completing Destroyer Officer School in Newport, R.I., he served as Engineer Officer aboard USS John King (DDG 3) in 1969. In March 1971, Gehman was assigned as Executive Officer of USS Mitscher (DDG 35) in Destroyer Squadron 26, the original "Squad." After two years aboard Mitscher, he served as Executive Assistant/Aide to the Deputy Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Atlantic Fleet/U.S. Atlantic Command for two years. Subsequent sea duty assignments included tours as Commanding Officer, USS Conserver (ARS 39) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Commanding Officer, USS Dahlgren (DDG 43) in Norfolk, Va; Surface Operations and Plans Officer with Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group 2 in Charleston, S. C.; Commanding Officer, USS Belknap (CG 26), the 6th Fleet Flagship in Gaeta, Italy; and Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Group 8 /Eisenhower Carrier Battle Group from July 1993 to July 1994. His Washington, D.C., tours include Assistant for Surface Captain Assignments at Naval Military Personnel Command, and Head, Officer Plans and Management Branch on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations.
