Women's Army Corps Second Officer Violet Hill poses after graduating from the first Women's Army Auxiliary Corps officer candidate school class at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, in August 1942. African-American women were allotted 40 slots in that first class, and they had to be well-educated and have professional experience.
